Inishbofin Sound

On a deceptively pleasant afternoon in summer 2003 we were slowly

manoeuvring the boat under the Northern cliffs of Clare Island when the

ship’s radio crackled into life with an emergency storm warning. We

instantly headed at full speed for the safety of Inishbofin Harbour 20

miles away to the south.

As we entered Inishbofin Sound, which runs between Inishbofin and the

now deserted Inishshark, the wind was increasingly gusting. The Atlantic

was becoming more broken and threatening. The seabirds were

screeching loud in anticipation.

We harboured safely and locked down on Murray’s Pub for three days,

as storm force 10 and 11 played itself out around the island.
