Chris Orr MBE RA

Born in Islington, London Chris graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1967 with an MA in printmaking. Prior to that he had attended the Ravensbourne and Hornsey Schools of Art. He now lives and works in London.

Chris Orr began his career as an artist publishing prints, exhibiting his work and teaching part-time at many Art Schools. He has subsequently had many one-person shows in Britain, America, Japan and France including the Serpentine Gallery, London (1971), the Whitechapel Gallery, London and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1976).  International solo shows include Galleria Grafica, Tokyo, Japan, in 1980, Jay Street Gallery, New York, USA, in 1983 and Print Guild, Melbourne, Australia in 1987.

Although often compared the political Satirists Hogarth and Gillray, Chris’s work presents more of a celebration of life rather than seeking to moralise and condemn.  His subjects are varied but behind much of his work is a story, a place or situation from which the work was inspired. Observation, whether social or literal is at the core of his subject matter.

In 1995, Chris was elected a Royal Academician and in 1998 was appointed Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, a position from which he retired in 2008 before being awarded an MBE. His work is in the collection of the Arts Council of Great Britain, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Science Museum, and the Tate Gallery.

Brook is proud to hold a broad selection of Chris's work in stock. Please contact us for details of other work not featured on the web-site.
