David Hockney

One of the best-known artists in the world today. As a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, photographer and designer, he has had a brilliant prize-winning career achieving fame by the time he was in his mid-20's. His phenomenal success has been not only based on the flair, wit and versatility of his work but also on his innovation and experimentation with all art forms.

Hockney was born in Bradford Yorkshire and is the 4th of 5 children. He attended the Bradford School of Art between 1953 and 1957 and then began a post graduate course at the Royal College of Art in 1959 from where he was awarded the Royal College of Art gold medal for his year in 1962.

Among some of his many outstanding works are his etchings illustrating ‘The Cavafy Poems’ and also six of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. In the 1970's he designed set and costumes for Stravinsky's, ‘The Rake's Progress’ and Mozart's, ‘The Magic Flute’. Being a perceptive commentator on art, he has published many books on various aspects of his subject.
