Catherine Cartwright

Catherine Cartwright is a multi-disciplinary artist, working primarily with printmaking, drawing and film to explore the concept of freedom from containment, the passage to refuge and the associated socio-political agendas impacting women.

Working directly with women affected by domestic abuse in participatory project is a key aspect of research, creating safe environments where conversations can unfold. In 2014 Cartwright spent five months working in a women’s refuge, witnessing the changing dynamics of the refugees and their children working to rebuild their lives. During her final weeks in residence, the refuge announced its closure after 32 years, due to funding cuts. Cartwright produced in response, ‘The Last Resident’, a short film which gave voice to one woman’s story, documenting more widely what refuge means to the individuals who pass through it.
