The romantic ruin of Old Wardour castle sits in a horseshoe of the
Wiltshire downs, high above its fishpond, twelve miles west of Salisbury.
A New Wardour was built and Old Wardour became a landscape folly.
An 18th century grotto and one or two 18th century pavilions augment
the ruins which show evidence of mining in the Civil War. Many rooms
are still roofed and a Grinling Gibbons carving enhances the inner court.
