One summer morning before daybreak in 2006, we left the quay in
Oban to head north west up the Sound of Mull with the ambition of
landing on the Small Isles in the Sea of the Hebrides.
Halfway up the Sound, the sun finally broke above the horizon behind
us and floodlit the mountains of Mull to our left in a riot of colour.
The 14th century Castle Duart, ancestral home of Clan McLean, sits
strategically overlooking the Sound on Mull’s west coast with the
3,000ft Ben More behind. We finally moored back in Oban at about
7:30 p.m. having made landfall on Rhum, Muck and Eigg.
